Excerpt:

Journal of Bristol Blackburn

Sunday, March 17th

There are times when being psychic really bites, and this is one of them. Here it is, three in the morning, and all I can think about is the boy who will eventually have his hands on me.

I have no idea what his name is. We’ve never met, but I feel like we’ve grown up together. I’ve had visions of him since I was six years old. Now, eleven years later, I know we’re getting closer and closer to finally meeting. I think it’s going to happen any day now.

And the thought scares the hell out of me.

I know what Dream Boy will look like. In a word: hot. Dark hair that falls loosely over his deep blue eyes. He has an angel’s face and the devil’s grin.

I know he’s got a bad boy attitude. Half the time, I get flashes of him getting hurt. Sometimes he’s playing the hero. Other times, he’s just being an idiot. Many times, it seems like there’s someone who enjoys hurting him.

What I don’t know is what he’ll be to me.

There are times when he seems to love me. Don’t ask me why. But he’ll look at me with nothing but love and contentment in his eyes. Earlier tonight, I had one of those dreams. One where he couldn’t keep his hands off of me. Weird that I know every inch of his body, yet I have no idea what his name is, huh?

Then there’s the other vision. It was the first one I had of him, and the one I have most often. It’s the one I woke from tonight, the feeling of his hands still on my skin.

In that vision, he doesn’t look at me with love, but with hatred. He has his hands wrapped around my neck as he slowly squeezes the life out of me.

So any day now, I’m about to meet the boy of my dreams —literally. Then I get to see if he’s going to be the love of my life or the end of it.

Funny thing is, I’m not sure which idea scares the crap out of me more.

Tour Schedule

rebelsRebels

The world is on fire. From the ashes like a phoenix rises a new America, one that will save it all. Under one condition; absolute and complete surrender.
The world complies without question. Those who don’t are destroyed. It is in this world, John is born. His very name is treason.
If the New America, now known to everyone as the State, knew what John was, they’d kill him, but instead they give him a gift.

amazon blog

EXCERPT:

But unlike the others, my parents have made me commit to memory the preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America, a document outlawed by the State and every night my father pulls out a very old Bible hidden in a compartment in our wall and we listen to him read aloud its words.  If it is found out that we have such a book, the penalty is death, but we read it anyway.   Our government is called the State of America and consists of most of the civilized world.  I do not know what schools were like before the Great Fires but ours are old and moldy, full to the breaking point with youth and children.  The conditions have worsened through the years since the State has taken over and slowly broken down society much like strip mining, leaving nothing in place of what they have taken.  In many ways, we are no more than cattle waiting to be taken to the slaughter, only to serve the State and its needs.  It is here at school that my life changed forever and I could no longer sit and do nothing while others decided my fate for me.

Praise for Rebels

John has a lot of potential (especially for someone so young) in that he sees the flaws in this society. He wants to be like George Washington and knows a lot about the manner in which a government should be run… Highly recommended. ~Amazon Review

Mounting the Whale by Colleen McCarty  Official Blog Tour

Click here for the tour schedule.

The self-made and affluent Pierce family is hurled into a seamy kidnapping plot when they receive a text message from Janine—the most troubled of all the Pierce children.

Cartel got me, tell mom

The siblings, drowning in their own problems, are forced to focus on the task at hand: a half-cocked rescue mission that involves a borrowed yacht, a favor from a notorious drug kingpin, and a shocking reunion none of them expected.

When the family decides to sneak into Mexico, mother Cybil is forced to deal with a rival CEO whom she’s developed feelings for in secret. Her only son, Tom, is willing to risk bodily harm to save Janine while his other sisters, Carlyle and Valerie, suspect that the kidnapping is less than legitimate.

The long sea voyage tests the limits of the family’s already frail bonds. Dark secrets of infertility, drugs, gambling and extreme taxidermy begin to float to the surface. But nothing compares to what they begin to learn about their missing sister.

If they’re going to make it out alive, they have to recognize they’re fighting the same battles and facing life’s greatest challenges: love, loneliness, and the struggle to find a place in the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I think I always knew I wanted to write, but kept trying to talk myself out of it. In college, I enrolled as an English major, but quickly switched when I realized I had no idea how I would make a living as an English major. I switched to something business-y.

I became an entrepreneur, opening two restaurants and a publishing company before my 28th birthday. But I always felt a tug. It wasn’t that I didn’t love helping people publish their books, and it wasn’t that I didn’t love marketing for my husband and I’s restaurant (Mod’s Coffee and Crepes, bee tee dubs)—there was just something missing.

When I would tell a story to a group of friends, or get really into a great book for example, I felt more alive. Something inside clicked on. So, even though I had a brand new baby (EVA!) and two businesses to run, I started trying to tell a story that I had been thinking about. Most of my writing was done after everyone had gone to bed, between 9pm and 12am, usually. I had a lot of help along the way, but 8 months later it was done.

Now, almost 12 months later, I’m ready to put this baby out into the world. And, I hope you’re ready too. It’s happening December 5th, 2013. There will be lots of ways to get involved, stay tuned here, or sign up for the newsletter (in the top right corner) to get up-to-date info on the book launch.

Love to one, friendship to many, goodwill to all.

REVIEW: I love the simplicity of the cover. The simplicity is anything but indicative of the storyline (and yet you’ll understand the cover after you’ve read the book). There is nothing simple about this book. It’s filled with action, adventure and comedy. I was drawn to this book because I’m always interested in all things cartel or organized crime; I was not disappointed.

The dysfunctional family makes the characters relatable, because whose family is perfect. There where times when I felt so bad I wanted to cry and others when I laughed so hard I did cry. The story line is fresh and the characters are interesting and somehow familiar.

Colleen McCarty’s first novel is a must read. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop. I was so invested in the characters that I felt a little sad that I wouldn’t be apart of their chaotic lives once I finished the book.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Game Plan by Natalie Corbett Sampson

Game PlanTitle: Game Plan

Author: Natalie Corbett Sampson

Publisher: Fierce Ink Press Co-Op Ltd.

Published: November 19, 2013

Summary (from Goodreads): “Poignant, well-paced and compassionate, Game Plan is an achingly real look at how two families cope when life doesn’t go as planned.” Tish Cohen, bestselling author of The Truth About Delilah Blue and Inside Out Girl.

Just because the play goes wrong, doesn’t mean you quit the game.

Ella Parker seems to have everything: great friends, an awesome family and a star position on her high school basketball team. The only thing missing from her life is a boyfriend. That changes once she catches the eye of Sam Cleveland. With Sam by her side Ella has it all. When a drunken night results in an unwanted pregnancy, her perfect life is turned upside down and she’s faced with an impossible decision.

Katherine Frayne has always wanted to be a mother. But with the last results of her in vitro fertilization pointing to no chance of a baby, her hopes are dashed. Then her husband Danny suggests they adopt. At first Kat is resistant, but she soon warms to the idea.

Ella and Katherine must navigate their lives amidst tough decisions, the consequences of which not only affect them but those they love the most.

Review: When I was first approached to review this book, I was reminded of the movie Juno–the unexpected pregnancy, infertility and adoption. However, this is a surprisingly fresh and new story. While it has all those elements, Sampson has presented each struggle in a unique way. This book will appeal to both young adults and adults alike since the topic is mature. I laughed and cried my way through the book. It was a quick read because I just had to know what was going to happen next. While I have to admit that beginning was a little slow, Sampson does an excellent job developing her characters and letting the reader get to know them before all the action takes place. Each character’s reactions and feelings are spot on.

Review: This was an easy and quick read. I completed the whole book in one day. Once I started reading about Destiny, I couldn’t stop. It’s an interesting and heartbreaking dilemma that Destiny finds herself in. The thing I enjoyed most about this story is that while it deals with religion, it’s mostly a story about forbidden love. It’s really a classic tale of narrow-mindedness keeping two young people from being together. I was reminded of Romeo and Juliet, yet with a much happier ending. In addition to a great love story, Destiny is chock full of tidbits about religions that I didn’t know much about. But more than that, Hale does a fantastic job developing interesting family dynamics. Each character has extremely real, and sometimes upsetting, family situation. While I found some of the dialogue to be a bit forced, I thought this was a great debut novel. I’m interested to see where Hale takes the story next.

Blog Tour: Cerberus by P.K. Gallagher

cerberus tour

Tour Schedule

cerberusCerberus: Book 1 of Parish by P.K. Gallagher

Paranormal YA Fantasy

For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that.

After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world.

In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live…or stay and die.

This is where the story of Parish begins.

P.K.Gallagher – Cerberus Excerpt: “Cerberus”

And suddenly the man was right in front of him.

“What the—!” Kaeden jumped back, shocked.

“Oh, but you are,” Rhiam said. “I can make the hunger go away altogether, you know. Make it so that everything is how it once was. My reasons for wanting this information and what you think of them are really of very little consequence. If you’ll get it to me without question, I’ll give you what you want in equal fashion. I will give you this.” He made a motion with his hand and above it appeared a small dagger.

Startled, Kaeden swore and stumbled back only to trip and fall backwards against a sofa. Rhiam squatted beside him, a patronizing smile on his face, the dagger hovering just above his palm.  It was maybe eight inches long with a handle that looked uncannily like bleached bone and a blade the color of blood.

And it materialized out of freaking nowhere, Kaeden thought in awe. He should have been throwing a fit; in fact, normally, he was certain he would have been. However, he was oddly calm right then as he looked at the dagger. The blade gave off an eerie, incandescent glow that eased his disquiet and hunger.

“You’re not joking about all this, are you?” he asked weakly.

Rhiam’s smile widened. “Do you think it’s funny?” Kaeden did not, and he knew it must show. “The blade is made of a stone we’ve named Cerberus,” he said. “It drains a…vampire’s immortality and the thirst for blood needed to sustain it.”

Kaeden flinched at the word, and it occurred to him that this was an all or nothing deal. Either he believed Rhiam’s entire story or none of it, meaning that if he believed that Rhiam could help him with his Cerberus stone, he’d have to believe that he truly had become a vampire. He couldn’t accept that, could he? He was human. He was Kaeden. Things like vampires just didn’t exist. And people can’t make things appear out of thin air or blow things up with a wave of their hand, but you’ve seen it done. He put a hand to his heart but felt nothing. He swallowed.

“How does it work?” How did this happen?

“It’s very straightforward, really. You simply drive the blade into your heart, and it will take care of the rest.” Kaeden looked at the dagger. It may have been small, more for decoration than combat, but it was wicked sharp and would no doubt kill someone very quickly if thrust through that person’s vital organs.

“You have got to be kidding me.” This has to be some kind of joke.

“Come now,” Rhiam said. “Don’t be so negative. You do want me to go away, don’t you? For everything to go away? For everything to fit into your nice little mold of sane and insane again? If you don’t now, you will soon. As soon as a dryyd comes after you again—”

“Stop it.” Where’s Hagan?

“—As soon as you have to drink blood—”

“I said stop.” Where’s my heartbeat.

“—As soon as you kill someone—”

“Shut up!” Kaeden shouted, scrambling to his feet and putting distance between himself and Rhiam. He scratched roughly at the back of his head. He just didn’t know. He didn’t know what he believed, he didn’t know what he was going to do, he felt like he didn’t know anything at all. He’d outlined his life so perfectly, planned everything so perfectly, complete with Plan Bs and even contingency plans for those. This, however, was something he’d never planned for, had never in a million years expected, and he had no idea how to deal with it, or even how to modify his perfectly laid out schemas to accept it. For the first time in years, he simply didn’t know what to do.
