Review: When I was first approached to review this book, I was reminded of the movie Juno–the unexpected pregnancy, infertility and adoption. However, this is a surprisingly fresh and new story. While it has all those elements, Sampson has presented each struggle in a unique way. This book will appeal to both young adults and adults alike since the topic is mature. I laughed and cried my way through the book. It was a quick read because I just had to know what was going to happen next. While I have to admit that beginning was a little slow, Sampson does an excellent job developing her characters and letting the reader get to know them before all the action takes place. Each character’s reactions and feelings are spot on.

Review: This was an easy and quick read. I completed the whole book in one day. Once I started reading about Destiny, I couldn’t stop. It’s an interesting and heartbreaking dilemma that Destiny finds herself in. The thing I enjoyed most about this story is that while it deals with religion, it’s mostly a story about forbidden love. It’s really a classic tale of narrow-mindedness keeping two young people from being together. I was reminded of Romeo and Juliet, yet with a much happier ending. In addition to a great love story, Destiny is chock full of tidbits about religions that I didn’t know much about. But more than that, Hale does a fantastic job developing interesting family dynamics. Each character has extremely real, and sometimes upsetting, family situation. While I found some of the dialogue to be a bit forced, I thought this was a great debut novel. I’m interested to see where Hale takes the story next.

And suddenly the man was right in front of him.

“What the—!” Kaeden jumped back, shocked.

“Oh, but you are,” Rhiam said. “I can make the hunger go away altogether, you know. Make it so that everything is how it once was. My reasons for wanting this information and what you think of them are really of very little consequence. If you’ll get it to me without question, I’ll give you what you want in equal fashion. I will give you this.” He made a motion with his hand and above it appeared a small dagger.

Startled, Kaeden swore and stumbled back only to trip and fall backwards against a sofa. Rhiam squatted beside him, a patronizing smile on his face, the dagger hovering just above his palm. It was maybe eight inches long with a handle that looked uncannily like bleached bone and a blade the color of blood.

And it materialized out of freaking nowhere, Kaeden thought in awe. He should have been throwing a fit; in fact, normally, he was certain he would have been. However, he was oddly calm right then as he looked at the dagger. The blade gave off an eerie, incandescent glow that eased his disquiet and hunger.

“You’re not joking about all this, are you?” he asked weakly.

Rhiam’s smile widened. “Do you think it’s funny?” Kaeden did not, and he knew it must show. “The blade is made of a stone we’ve named Cerberus,” he said. “It drains a…vampire’s immortality and the thirst for blood needed to sustain it.”

Kaeden flinched at the word, and it occurred to him that this was an all or nothing deal. Either he believed Rhiam’s entire story or none of it, meaning that if he believed that Rhiam could help him with his Cerberus stone, he’d have to believe that he truly had become a vampire. He couldn’t accept that, could he? He was human. He was Kaeden. Things like vampires just didn’t exist. And people can’t make things appear out of thin air or blow things up with a wave of their hand, but you’ve seen it done. He put a hand to his heart but felt nothing. He swallowed.

“How does it work?” How did this happen?

“It’s very straightforward, really. You simply drive the blade into your heart, and it will take care of the rest.” Kaeden looked at the dagger. It may have been small, more for decoration than combat, but it was wicked sharp and would no doubt kill someone very quickly if thrust through that person’s vital organs.

“You have got to be kidding me.” This has to be some kind of joke.

“Come now,” Rhiam said. “Don’t be so negative. You do want me to go away, don’t you? For everything to go away? For everything to fit into your nice little mold of sane and insane again? If you don’t now, you will soon. As soon as a dryyd comes after you again—”

“Stop it.” Where’s Hagan?

“—As soon as you have to drink blood—”

“I said stop.” Where’s my heartbeat.

“—As soon as you kill someone—”

“Shut up!” Kaeden shouted, scrambling to his feet and putting distance between himself and Rhiam. He scratched roughly at the back of his head. He just didn’t know. He didn’t know what he believed, he didn’t know what he was going to do, he felt like he didn’t know anything at all. He’d outlined his life so perfectly, planned everything so perfectly, complete with Plan Bs and even contingency plans for those. This, however, was something he’d never planned for, had never in a million years expected, and he had no idea how to deal with it, or even how to modify his perfectly laid out schemas to accept it. For the first time in years, he simply didn’t know what to do.

Excerpt: Chapter 5

“…Does having a copy of your dead mother around bother you?”

No one had ever asked him that before. It felt good to talk about it. “It’s confusing.” Jason looked into Boston’s eyes. The warmth and concern he saw there was mesmerizing. “I don’t think Isaac believes mom’s dead. I don’t use that program because it doesn’t feel right.”

“It would bother me, too,” she paused. “What do you do all day?”

“Excuse me?” Jason was not offended by the question. In fact, it felt good to have someone take an interest in him.

“You don’t go to public school.”

“I already got my GED.”

“Is that it?”

“What do you mean?”

“Is that all you want from your life?”

Jason had never thought about it like that. “Why? Everything I could ever want is inside the hologram machine.”

“I’m not.”

Her words were like an arrow to his heart. She stepped closer, and he blushed as a black convertible loaded with teenage girls drove up and parked on the side of the street.

“Hey, Boston,” the driver called out.

“I’m coming,” Boston waved at her friends. Then she turned back to Jason. “By the way, I broke up with Ricky today.”

Jason felt like he had stepped in front of a moving truck. By the time he recovered his wits enough to speak, she had already jumped into the convertible, and they had peeled out, disappearing down the road.

My Review:

DiSemblance is a fast-paced, sci-fi, thriller. Once the action got started, I couldn’t put the book down. I read it in two days. I have to admit that it took me a few pages to really get into the story but once I did I just had to keep reading to see what would happen next. The technology in this story is amazing. A hologram machine?! How cool is that! And even though it seems a little unrealistic, the author makes it all seem so tangible. While the plot and premise of the book were great, I felt it lacked in character development. Lloyd’s character isn’t really ever developed which makes his sudden disappearance seem less tragic than it should be. In addition, the relationship between Boston and Jason develops rather rapidly which also seems odd, especially for a boy who has never been in a relationship before.

Despite the flaws in the character development, I am looking forward to the next book in the series. There are so many unanswered questions. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys thrillers/mysteries and science fiction.

She started working as a reporter when she was sixteen and won awards for feature, news, and editorial writing. She has also done freelance writing. In addition to writing, she works as a director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, cupcakes, and U2. She lives in Utah with her extremely supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber’s.

The garage door was open, my dad’s legs sticking out from under the Mustang. He was six feet tall and resembled a tank: strong and capable of anything. I was surprised he fit under the car. The fact that he was already working on the Mustang meant he must have heard about the fire and the dead truck from the police scanner he’d bought several years ago to keep track of his wife. My mom saw him too and grabbed her purse, which she’d managed to save before the truck was completely engulfed in flames.

“You better come with me,” Mom said. “This is a Mustang situation.”

I nodded as we got out of the car, and followed her into the garage.

My mom walked up to the edge of the Mustang. She looked down through the engine compartment, trying to see my dad through all the parts under the hood.

Mom had a wide variety of emotions to pull from depending on the level of chaos she’d caused. For fire, she generally chose timid. “Hi, honey,” she said. When she didn’t get a response she continued, “Now I’m sure you probably heard about this on the scanner, but I just want you to know that I’m fine, and it wasn’t my fault. I didn’t get hurt much, and everything is okay.” The only sound that came from under the hood was the noise of a ratchet-wrench. “Well, not everything exactly, we need to go truck shopping again soon, but until then, the insurance company should give us a rental.”

This time there was a disbelieving grunt from the garage floor. We stood there for a minute waiting to see if the grunt would be followed by anything substantial. When it wasn’t, Mom decided on another tactic. “Anyway, Kate got to cover the story, isn’t that exciting! And since she was already at the scene, I didn’t have to bother you to come pick me up.”

Mom waited again. Finally my dad rolled out from under the car, wrench in hand. He pointed the wrench in my direction. “I’m glad you didn’t get your mother’s disaster genes.” He turned to my mom, looking her over, his eyes softening as they lingered on her bandages. “I did hear about it on the scanner. I was just hoping it wasn’t you. Wishful thinking. I’m glad you’re not seriously hurt. Not your fault…” He snorted and shook his head. “You get to explain this to the insurance company.”

And with that, he slid back under the car.

Jump When Ready by David Pandolfe Official Blog Tour

I’m so excited to be apart of the Jump When Ready blog tour. Thank you Book Nerd Tours for organizing this amazing tour.

Synopsis

Since he drowned, Henry has remained isolated with the same group of teenagers and he keeps wondering why. After all, what could he possibly have in common with a Mohawk-sporting punker from the 80s, a roller skater from the 70s with a thing for kimonos, and an English “rocker” from the 60s? Henry can hear the other groups but he never sees them. Soon, Henry learns that his new friends all possess unique skills for making themselves noticed by the living. Is Henry’s group kept isolated because of their abilities? If so, are they considered gifted or seen only as a potential bad influence?

Before Henry can reach any conclusions, he witnesses his sister being kidnapped. He knows who did it, where she’s being held and what will happen if the kidnappers don’t get what they want. As the police chase false leads, Henry comes to realize that he’s his sister’s only hope. But for Henry to even have a chance, he has to convince a group of teenagers that dead doesn’t mean helpless.

Review

I read this book in one sitting. I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Originally I thought this would be a depressing book since the main character is dead and stuck “in-between” worlds, but it wasn’t doom and gloom. There is witty banter and strong bonds between characters. And speaking of characters, I loved all of the characters that Henry meets upon his arrival to the in-between world. They are realistic and each have their own quirkiness that makes me want to be their friend (Yes, even Curtis). The pacing was fast and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was exciting to get to know each kid in the in-between world and the group dynamics. It was even more exciting to watch Henry try to save his sister Bethany from the world beyond. The combination of coming-of-age, philosophical and thriller story comes together to make a fascinating and engaging book. It makes you think about what the afterlife will be like and if the “in-between” world will be as frustrating as it is for Henry. I can’t wait for my students to read this book in the fall. I think there will be many amazing conversations that come from reading this book.

I’m looking forward to David’s next novel!

David Pandolfe

David Pandolfe has been a bartender in Seattle, the front man for an alternative rock band in Los Angeles and a college writing teacher in Richmond (among other things).

One day, it occurred to him that sometimes these experiences felt like completely different lives altogether. Which got him to writing Jump When Ready, a novel about of bunch of teenagers trying to get over their past lives while getting ready to jump into their next.

While he’s still writing about himself in third person, David Pandolfe should probably mention that at one point he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has had short stories published in Millennium and the Georgetown Review. Jump When Ready is his first YA novel but he’s currently working on another, to be released in the fall of 2013.
